Trigleph

Trigleph, the spyrix metropolis. Trigleph is the largest city on Elympios, and certainly the grandest. Like its surroundings of an ever present grey and clouded sky, Trigleph is very much the same - buildings are often metallic in nature and blacks, greys, and darker colours are the norm, save for the fluorescent lights that keep the roads lit, which are yellows and lighter blues. It's not a very warm city, at least not on the surface, with its climate and its colour scheme and the little nature that manages to cling onto existence here - trees are irregular, often only in the more richer of areas, with interspaced flowers every now and then in the residential communal areas - but it's a popular place to be all the same, and thrives well enough. Due to its size, the city is divided into convenient districts, with residential buildings separate from the commercial side of things and vice versa. Lodgings are small (unless you have the money for something larger and grander) and spaces are limited, so Trigleph makes up for this by going up. Many of its buildings are tall, almost impossibly so.

Trigleph boasts a robust underground system, known as a Subway, and there's also the above ground rail network. It's one of the last places in Elympios that still has a neighbouring sea - that is to say, it's not dried up yet - so its port still functions and is not redundant. Food, weapons, armour, and just about anything will make its way through Trigleph and be sold here or taken someplace else.

Technology Drive and Spirius Corp: Technology Drive is one of the most showy streets in the city, with many important buildings and companies located here - it also leads towards the train station, but many will stop to admire the Spirius Corporation's headquarters. It looms above the drive with at least forty floors, if not more, and that's not mentioning the underground facilities. Wait, underground facilities? No, there's nothing like that! Spirius Corp is designed for all your creature comforts and as a distributor of food and other goods. Nothing fishy about it.

At least that's what they're telling you at the front desk, and if you're not employed, very sorry, but you won't be seeing past that unless you have ways or means or don't mind getting caught.

The Highroads: Outside of Trigleph, the barrenness of the land begins to show. The closest highroad to the residential district is Alest, which, at some point in time, followed a river - boats can still be seen in the distance, long since moored in rock, never to move again. You can still see the formations in the rock carved out by the water, even if the water is no longer present. Torbalen Highroad is in slightly better shape, but was once a lush grassland but has slowly begun to dry out, the grass patchy and the trees slowly beginning to die. It won't be long before it turns into another rocky outcrop, or a desert. Only time will tell.

In the Havens, only the immediate areas closest to Trigleph are present, not the Highroads in their entirety. Upon reaching this Haven, the lands will begin to wither and die.

History: Not much is known about how Trigleph has changed since its inception, or even since it was introduced as a place (except in its collective attitude towards Rieze Maxia). However, there is Elympion history as a whole to look at, which is still relevant to the city.

Elmpyios was once a thriving world, until it fell into decline due to its reliance on spyrix for daily life. Unlike their counterpart world, this was not a reciprocal process, but a death sentence. The technology the Elympions had developed was slowly killing the spirits around them - which they were not aware of, and didn't really understand what was making their technology work - and because the spirits were dying, the world began to die as well. But the Elympions had a myth they looked to, a story, about another world out there somewhere with plenty of energy for them to use, and getting this much needed energy become a project that was dubbed the Otherworld Reactor Plan. In this way, the energy they needed would be obtained and the world would not have to suffer - and nature would not have to decline - anymore than it already had. This world, they discovered, was Rieze Maxia. Rieze Maxia was found after a hole in the schism - the barrier protecting the two worlds from the other - was punctured by a group known as Exodus, whose intent was to return home after their disappearance on the E.S.S Zenithra.

Milla Maxwell and her companions found their way to Elympios and Trigleph after the invasion, and though her initial intent was to destroy spyrix, she and her companions had never stopped to think about its necessity or the ingrained attitude towards it in the society. It was with this in mind that she decided to give them a chance to right their ways without wiping out spyrix entirely, by giving them a grace period: in other words, dispelling the schism, and making mana plentiful, for a time. This would give Elympios and its cities time to develop new ways of harnessing spirit's power without killing them, such as through the use of spyrites.

It's been a year or so since that day, and when once they saw the people of the other world as a fuel source - if they even believed them to be people at all - now, Trigleph has accepted their neighbouring world and a fledgling peace is in place. But this is not welcomed by everyone, unfortunately.

More recently, Trigleph is one of the few places on Elympios to employ Rieze Maxians, particularly in Spirius Corp, and was also the site of the last large scale assault by the now terrorist group Exodus, which has rebranded itself for a new cause: non-cooperation with Rieze Maxia.

Culture:

*Spyrix and Technology: As a society, Elympios – and Trigleph especially – are heavily dependent on spyrix. Spyrix is their technology source, and powers just about everything – trains are spyrixes, GHS' are spyrixes, implants that allow an elderly person to walk are spyrixes... the list goes on. The problem with spyrix is that, through its use, it kills the spirits it absorbs, which is the reason why Elympios is slowly beginning to die, though this is something that the society was unaware of until one year ago.

There are other options being explored, primarily by Jude and his research team at Helioborg, but these are still in the early stages. Unlike spyrix, spyrites do not harm or kill a spirit, at least in theory, and allows the individual to have the shared relationship with the spirit that those on Rieze Maxia have, thanks to their mana lobe. Fortunately, at the moment, there is a grace period with the heavy reliance on spyrix, as the dispelled schism has resulted in a lot of mana, which means spirits don't die even if spyrix is still used. Of course, this can't go on forever.

*Housing: In the city, housing is solely flats, unless you belong to one of the wealthier households. Apartment buildings can range from three floors to many more, with multiple apartments on each floor. The most modest of these is a singular room with a living area and a bed in the corner, and others have an additional kitchen with two separate rooms. The more you're willing to part with, the better digs you'll have to live in.

Apartment buildings often have a shared "green" space – or communal space – outside, which may be shared with another block. This can include swing-sets, flowers, and places to sit and relax. Some also have interior spaces at the entrances.

*Families and family structure: Families are typically parents and children, but it's not uncommon to be missing a family member, be it a parent, a child, or another close relative, thanks to the disappearance of the Zenithra some twenty-one years ago. It's also not uncommon for elder children to become guardians to and raise their siblings due to a missing parent. Likewise, it's not uncommon to be missing family members due to illness. In other words, families have a typical structure, but that typical structure doesn't always necessary happen.

*Food: MUTTON! FRESH MUTTON!

Food tastes a little bit less if it's been grown on Elympios naturally. It's not bad, but by no means is it good: there's a lack of nutrients, fields are fallow, there's not enough water... and if you're an Elympion, it's likely you've grown accustomed to the taste. However, food grown with spyrix and food that's been imported tastes as you'd expect it to. There's no poranges or napples, no great tasting Leronde chicken, but the options are starting to become available if you know where to look. Outside the harbour is where you'll usually find food being sold.

There's also the local acoholic beverage that's popular in Trigleph, "Ex Machina" Whiskey, and is served in bars around the city.

For some reason, mutton is also really popular.

*Exports/Imports and Local Products: Other towns in Elympios import to Trigleph, as, being a city, they don't grow any of their food for themselves, and it's likely factories are elsewhere in more desolate and less bustling places. More recently, Trigleph has also begun to import from Rieze Maxia too, which is likely something they'll continue to do in the Havens.

*Economy: The currency used is gald. It's possible to earn a little coin by doing odd jobs around town from the job board in the market district. Due to fact nature has long since begun to die on Elympios, simple things such as food is in high demand and a certain minded individual could attempt to create a monopoly on certain types – which is the case for some dishonest merchants looking for a quick profit, as they've imported from Rieze Maxia for the better goods and charge astronomical prices in turn. Your personal health and any doctor's bills also come with a very high price tag, too. Be careful who you deal with, 'kay?

*Government: Unlike Rieze Maxia, Elympios is without a ruling house and its leaders are voted into their respected positions (instead of clan fighting to become King/Queen, like in Auj Oule, and a royal family's inheritance in Rashugal – at least until the two countries were united under one banner by Gaius, the leader of Auj Oule). Anybody can become a politician regardless of social standing in Elypmios, though of course, if you're well read, well liked, and have the monetary means, you're going to have much better success at attaining that rank.

Presently the most talked about member of the government is Chancellor Marcia, who oversees much of the relationship with Rieze Maxia.

It's worth noting that the Spirius Corporation, based in Trigleph, has the means – not to mention the power and the cash – to basically exist outside of the government and the public's knowledge. Whilst the public may think them to be a simple distributor of goods, maker of household appliances and so on, they're actually a research institute into fractured dimensions – which is your standard parallel universes which are destroyed in favour of the prime dimension, which is slowly being crippled by the fact these universes exist in the first place. In a time of crisis, they could feasibly take control of all of Elympios away from the elected government. Y'know, if they wanted. They could also casually sway public opinion away from you and your values – which happened with the Otherworld Reactor Plan, to basically harvest spirits and mana from Rieze Maxia, which they originally supported, so naturally a large collection of the population followed suit. When they changed their tune, so did the population. They have enough public trust and placement in people's minds that in some ways, Spirius Corp has and always will be the actual ones in charge...

Another group of note is Exodus, a group originally founded in Rieze Maxia by the survivors of the cruise ship Zenethra's disappearance: this group wanted to get back to Elympios, and was a stepping stone in the (now abandoned) Otherworld Reactor Plan. Even though logically, they would be without purpose, they now largely act as a terrorist sect who dislike building any sort of positive relationship with the world that was once on the other side of the schism. It's not uncommon for them to raid or attack buildings or places, and mostly recently the grand opening of the Oscore railway line was interrupted by Exodus assassinating everyone onboard and then ramming it into the plant, which was destined to help with some of Elympios' future problems with food and the like. Presently, they seem to be biding their time.

*Languages Spoken: The common tongue of Elympios, which is the same as Rieze Maxia. The written variant is different, however.

*Mode(s) of Transportation: Within the city itself, largely, you'll be using your own two feet to get around – above ground, at least. Trigleph has an extensive subway system which will get you to where you want to go across the city, with plenty of stops here and there. The epicentre of the transport system is at the aptly named Trigleph Central Station, where the subway can be accessed as well as the train lines themselves. In its natural setting, trains ran to every corner of Elympios, from Marksburg to Drellin; but in the Havens, obviously this will need to be developed by NPCs, or player characters if they want to take the train out of town. These trains vary from lavish two storied beasts to those that are less so and are primarily used by older lines.

Trigleph also has a port, with one of the few surviving seas at its beck and call, so ships come and go on a semiregular basis – these days it's a split between cruise ships and supply ships, and there's rarely anything small setting sail from there. Some of these ships are also able to fly, and Trigleph does have a number of these rather impressive airships – however, part of the peace agreement between Elympios and Rieze Maxia forbids their use, so you won't be seeing any in flight.

Hopefully.

To use the transport network in and around Trigleph, one must be in possession of a GHS.

*Methods of Communication: A GHS is the equivalent of a cellphone. Call and text (and emoticons!) are available, and it is fully customisable in a full range of colours and the ringtone or text alert of your choice. The GHS is also used as a method of paying for transportation around Trigleph, by simply scanning it at one of the ticket machines in Trigleph Central/the subway stations.

However, there are some downsides to having a GHS. If you get on the wrong side of the law, it is possible for you to receive travel restrictions placed on your GHS, so you won't be able to run anywhere unless you actually run, but that won't exactly be of any good as your exact location can be tracked (which Spirius Corp might be doing anyway. Possibly). Again, this can also happen in the case of massive debt, as a way for banks to keep an eye on their debters. Simply, you won't be leaving Trigleph by any means, not even waystone teleportation. If it's debt, you'll also have a maximum gald cap, and anymore than that and you'll be hassled constantly to pay it back. Sorry about that. However, fortunately for you, with regular installments, your travel restrictions can be lifted, so you won't be stuck in Trigleph forever if this happens to you. (They'll probably still hassle you for the rest of the debt, though. Don't say you weren't warned.)

Local Inhabitants:

Bisley - the president of Spirius Corp, usually seen with Vera, his secretary.

Rideux - He's a creepy guy in a suit that works for Bisley. You'll know him when you see him. Has a tendancy to land an individual in a debt situation.

Vera and Nova - Vera is Bisley's assistant who does all that pesky writing work, and Nova is her twin sister, who works at the back and will be the one hassling you if you end up with a massive loan payment.

Julius - Up until recently, Julius was the favoured employee of Spirius Corp, but has since fled due to unknown circumstances after complications in a fractured dimension. His whereabouts are unknown. Ludger, his younger brother who has replaced him as an agent, is also not present in the city.

Kitty Catt - the owner of one hundred (misplaced) cats, currently being "found" by Ludger, but some are still missing. Maybe they've wandered into the Havens...? Anyway, she lives in the residential district in the Freres Appartments, and if you're lucky enough to get a key, you might be able to help a girl out. Or cuddle some cats, if that's what suits you.

Risks: Exodus are the biggest immediate threat that Trigleph faces, but as long as you're not a major stepping stone in diplomatic relations between other worlds, you probably won't be targeted. Even though they won't like their predicament with being in the Havens, they will likely not take it out on individuals at this time, unless they led to great social change. They seem to prefer targeting things rather than people: Oscore was an extreme example of how far they were prepared to go to prove to both worlds that they were still a force to be reckoned with, and that their feelings shouldn't be ignored.

Outside of town there's also an array of monsters, but to the seasoned adventurer, this will hardly pose a problem, as there's nothing special about them. On an odd occasion a strong beast may crop up, but this will be contained fairly quickly. Or you can take it out yourself for some gald, if you report it to the job board in town.

Then, well, there's the debts and restricted movement, but that's a good deterrent for preventing crime happening in the first place, it seems.

Celebrations: None that are known, but assumedly birthdays, graduation, gaining a good job, clearing your debt... y'know, normal things.

Additional Information: Trigleph is being pulled after the start of Xillia 2, shortly after Ludger is taken on as a member of Spirius Corp and has retrieved three of four waymarkers (post chapter 9).

Also, city theme music.
